Why It Happens Here
Holly Springs sits about 18 miles out from our Cartersville shop
And the drive matters here because of what's waiting at the other end: a lot of these houses went up around 2007, newer than most of what we see closer to home. That means the rollers on these doors are almost always the factory-standard nylon kind with a sealed bearing, not the steel rollers you'd find on an older house.
- 18 miles
Nylon rollers are quiet and fine for the first decade or so
But they're not built to run forever. After 15 to 20 years of daily cycles, the nylon wheel starts to flatten on one side or the bearing inside dries out. Our climate here runs cold-moderate, and nylon gets stiffer and more brittle in a cold garage - a roller that's already worn will seize or crack faster once temperatures drop for a stretch. If your door is from that mid-2000s build wave, this is roughly the age where we start getting these calls.
- 20 years
It's not a defect
It's just a part reaching the end of its normal life at the same time across a lot of houses that were built in the same few years.
How We Fix It
We pull the old rollers out one at a time, working the track so the door stays supported the whole time - you don't need to take the door off the hardware to do this. For most of these 2000s-era doors we're replacing a full set of 10, since if one side's worn the other side is close behind.
What we put back depends on what the door's actually doing. If the original nylon rollers are fine for the door's weight, we'll put nylon back - same quiet ride, same sealed bearing, just new. If the track shows wear patterns that suggest the door's heavier than what the original rollers were rated for, we'll talk to you about stepping up to a steel roller with a sealed bearing instead. We check the track alignment while we're in there too, since bent track is often what's actually causing the grinding, not just the rollers.
We don't replace rollers one at a time to save you money upfront - a mismatched set wears unevenly and you're calling us back in six months for the other nine.
Time on the Job
Figure the drive from Cartersville into the schedule - at 18 miles it's not a same-hour walk-in, so we build the trip into the appointment window rather than treating it as a quick add-on stop. Once we're on site, a standard 10-roller swap on a double door runs under two hours including the track check and a cycle test.
If we find bent track sections or a bracket that's pulled loose - which happens more on doors with worn rollers that have been grinding against the track for a while - that adds time, because we're not going to leave a straightened-but-still-weak track behind us. We'd rather tell you upfront that the job's running longer than rush it and have you calling again in a month.
The Complications
Holly Springs households skew toward higher incomes than a lot of the area we cover, and in practice that shows up as more insulated steel doors and heavier panel sections on these newer builds - which means the rollers doing the work are carrying more weight than a lightweight single-layer door would put on them. If your door is one of the heavier insulated models, nylon rollers sized for a lighter door will wear out faster than they should, and that's worth flagging before we just swap like for like.
We also see openers on these newer doors tied into sensor systems that weren't common on older installs - if a roller's binding badly enough that the door's been reversing on its own, that's worth mentioning when you call, since it changes what we check first.
What You Are Seeing
A grinding or rumbling sound as the door travels, worse at the point where the roller hits a bend in the track. A door that jerks or hesitates partway up or down instead of moving smooth. Rollers that look flat on one side instead of round, or a roller that's cracked and chipping at the edge - more common once a cold stretch has made brittle nylon finally give. If the opener's reversing the door partway through a cycle for no clear reason, a jammed or seized roller further down the track is one of the first things we'd check.
